Thesis by faculty members of IMU adopted by ICASSP, a world’s first-class conference in the field of signal processing

Recently the thesis of research written collaboratively by the team of Prof. Liu Yang from the School of Electronic Information Engineering and Prof. Zhang Junxing from the College of Computer Science of IMU entitled Joint Beam Selection and Precoding Based on Differential Evolution for Millimeter-Wave Massive MIMO Systems was adopted by ICASSP, a world’s first-class conference in the field of signal processing. ICASSP is a flagship conference of the Signal Processing Society of IEEE with fairly high prestige and influence in the world’s signal processing field. This if the first time for research achievements of the discipline of information and communications engineering of IMU to be adopted by the conference, with Prof. Liu Yang as the first author and IMU as the first institution of the thesis.

At the moment the technology of millimeter-wave massive MIMO is regarded as the key technology in 5G and the future 6G wireless communication network. The vast number of RF chains, high cost of hardware and huge quantities of energy consumption caused by hundreds, if not thousands of antennas equipped at millimeter-wave communication system base stations are incompatible with the needs for large capacity and low power consumption of communication systems in the future. Beam selection by using beam space MIMO can significantly reduce the number of RF chains without impairing performance. Therefore joint beam selection and precoding are the key technological solution to this problem. For this purpose the team of Prof. Liu Yang proposed a method of joint beam selection and precoding based on differential evolution. The innovative integration of differential evolution into the process of beam selection of the method assigns optimized wave beams for each individual user through the optimization of population iteration and thus effectively decreases power consumption and inter-wave beam interference. In addition, to further lower multi-user interference, QR precoding is improved through equalization of diagonal lines and TH technology, which offers solution to multi-user interference and comparatively high rate of wrong codes caused by differences in effective channel gains, and significantly lowers complexity in computation. The research effectively solves the problems of multi-user interference and property loss caused by different channel gains and greatly improves the wave beam space communication property of millimeter-wave massive MIMO system.

IMU’s endeavor of building Double First Class and the joint construction of the Ministry of Education and the Autonomous Region provide strong support of scientific research platform for the research of the project. The Division of Development Planning, the Division of Science and Technology, the Division of Human Resources and other functional departments of IMU are highly supportive to the project. Meanwhile, the project is sponsored by the General Program (62071257) and Regional Program (62161037) of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Program of Young Leading Talents in Science and Technology of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (NJYT-20-A11) and the Foundation of the Cultivation of Excellent Youths of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (2021JQ07).
